INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
Support is available for individuals ages 9 and older. Maybe you feel stuck. Or helpless. Or discouraged. Or alone. Together you and your therapist will address the issues you face in life. Whether your struggles are situational or on-going, you will explore their impact on your life story, finding ways to expand your perspective of your narrative, empowering you to create for yourself greater peace and well-being.
EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED COUPLE THERAPY
Sometimes you think you just can’t communicate. But that’s not exactly the problem. You know what you want to say but you can’t. You feel alone, or hurt, or frightened of the response. Other times you feel confused and hopeless, you’re trying everything you know how to do and none of it seems to help. With advanced training in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, Merinda will work with you to address the deeper emotional needs and fears that underlie many relational concerns. You will identify your interaction cycle; explore your longings to connect and feel secure with each other; work to heal emotional hurts and foster growth as a unit through new experiences with each other.
STEP FAMILY EDUCATION & SUPPORT
Step families have similarities to original family, and they also have many differences. But you’ve never really been taught how to manage those differences. You end up feeling discouraged and disappointed. Sometimes you blame your partner, or the kids, or even yourself. There’s no need for blame here. Learning how to navigate the complexities each unique step-family experiences will help create an environment for growth and attachment in your home. What are realistic, reasonable expectations? How do you best support each other and your children? What tools are there for handling the aspects of the relationship no one signed up for? There is hope for finding answers to these questions and many more.
Merinda and her colleague taught an advanced-level graduate course on Counseling Blended Families at Northwest Nazarene University, using a syllabus they developed for the Counseling Department. Merinda also created and teaches a Blended Family Workshop designed to point struggling families in a helpful direction, and to educate interested community partners. This workshop can be delivered as a one-time educational presentation, or facilitated as an interactive, multiple session workshop providing education, support, normalization, and helpful basic tools and strategies.
